Get Real Sweepstakes: Week #3 — Win an iPod touch

Security & Privacy

UPDATE: This sweepstakes is now closed. The winner will be contacted and then announced via our Facebook page.

The average Facebook user has 130 “friends”.

If you are an average Facebook user and sharing your information with “friends of friends”, you’re theoretically sharing the intimate details of your life with nearly 17,000 people.  But the fact is that even if your privacy settings are locked down to the most restrictive levels and you only have one friend, your information is only as secure as that one friend.

And now a judge in New York has ruled that no matter what your privacy settings are, anything you publish on a social network could be subpoenaed. That’s right—anything you publish on Facebook, Twitter or Facebook could be used against you in a court of law.

People do things online that they would never do in the real world. In the real world, we don’t expect privacy in public. That’s why we suggest that you think before you publish any private information on any social network.

This leads us to this week’s giveaway question: How many online “friends” do you have?

Read the rules and post your answer in the comments of this post for you chance to win an iPod touch 8GB plus F-Secure Internet Security for you and a friend.

Cheers,

Sandra

This really depends on what you mean by “friends”. If you count people who follow me on Twitter, then it’s nearly 400.

Remember “loose lips sink ships”. There will always be disgruntled persons that do not work for business or civic jobs. Watch what you write.

181 Facebook Friends. “Survey Completed”

(The survey was an interesting exercise. I believe I have my account “locked down”, don’t share my e-mail with anyone or list my address. I also don’t post personal information in updates. What surprised me is that I know about 1/2 of the people in real life. I had actually thought that the majority were “forum friends”.)

There are 3 inline “friends” which I forgot to include in the above comment.

242 on Facebook

I just want to make something clear regarding the survey, Facebook has done a good job cutting down on scams, but the problem that is happening is that there are Facebook survey apps that hook into the platform from web sites. For instance, a site might be hosting a contest but requires that you fill out a survey using Facebook, and requires that you invite your friends to join in which is used as a catch. You are not guaranteed to win anything, but they are guaranteed access to 20 of your friends along with your profile information. I call this voluntary social engineering. I am very guilty of it, the reason why I go through with most times is because I am already in too deep.

I forgot to add survey complete, I hope this does not disqualify my entry.

79 facebook “friends” 100 Playstation network “friends” and 4 real online frends from the real world 😀 so that is 79+100+4= 183 online friends

I have “only” 6 Friends in my facebook profile just my real best friends and some of their family its just because to stay in contact when i´m away. Thats enough for me. Maybe in the future there are some more to be added but for now its enough.

I’ll post. “i’ll play a roulette”
I have 18 followers on twitter, 75 contacts in skype, 25 friends in steam, 10 watchers in deviantart. i think it’s all. and totally i have ~115 “online friends”. so, maybe skype and steam isn’t social network, or maybe it is.. as you wish 😀

I am somewhat paranoid online and don’t friend just anyone, so I only have 39 friends.

eure Anja

“most” because I don’t call my ex, people abroad, nor old school friends too often. I can dig their number up if mail won’t cut it.

Completed the survey. I get those facebook ads in the middle of my wall in IE but not in Firefox. Those ads are so annoying, facebook was so slow to load, I mostly use Firefox now because of the ads on IE

I have around 50 friends. Not too many, but at least i can count on them.
Survery completed.

Hmmm, tricky question in some respects.

I wonder how many people above are counting the number of contacts they have on Facebook plus the number of followers they have on Twitter and coming to a grand total of ‘friends’.

Personally, I would say I have over 5,000 acquaintances spread across social networking sites but how many of those are true friends?

Less than five I would guess.

154 actual friends*
*I just finished deleting all the people I didn’t really know:)

I have about 60 on Facebook but only about 7 are actually real friends. The friend word seems very overused if you ask me. Most people really don’t know the meaning of the term friend. The majority of my “friends” on FB are merely acquaintances.

Thank you for taking our survey. Your response is very important to us.

I don’t really have friends on Facebook. I just have it for just having it, lol. I wouldn’t post such information online. I’m already paranoid as it is to even let myself get to that point where I just share anything and almost everything.

Almost 2 outta 4 r online!!! And my total frnz in my list counts 227 and +1 evryday 😉

SURVEY COMPLETED

Plenty would be my answer, most of whom i’ve met in the real world too: with a few exceptions though. Most of them are on orkut & on facebook the number is around 85+

completed survey.

2,795 Followers on twitter and have knocked my FaceBook “friends” down 500 to 148 🙂 For safety (didn’t know most that were following me)

Just completed survey….eek and made me think about somethings I do on facebook too. Thanks!
