F-Secure and Future Female are teaming up to introduce the exciting world of cyber security to women with IT backgrounds. This weekend at Disobey – an annual hacker event in Helsinki – F-Secure is sponsoring a Future Female workshop that gives participants a crash course in cyber security.

Women are typically underrepresented in the IT sector, including the cyber security industry. The exact number varies according to region, but globally, women only make up about 11 percent of the cyber security workforce. And at the same time, the cyber security industry is facing a massive shortage in skilled workers, so it’s an imbalance worth addressing.

The workshop is designed to provide participants with a brief overview on how to “think security.” And while the workshop will only last a couple of hours, it’ll be comprehensive enough to demonstrate how big of an issue cyber security has become, and how many opportunities there are for women looking to enter the industry.

“The skills shortage facing the cyber security industry is creating demand for more specialists, but also a more security conscious workforce. After all, a cyber attack against a company affects the customers, employees, and even the executives and decision makers,” says F-Secure Talent Acquisition Manager Johanna Kurki. “There’s never been more opportunities for women to break into this industry than there are right now, and we’re happy to sponsor this event to show women how exciting a career in cyber security can be.”

Unfortunately, the workshop is already full. But women over 18 interested in participating can still register for the waiting list.

F-Secure’s Christine Bejerasco (Consumer R&D Lead), Karmina Aquino (Threat Intelligence Lead), Laura Noukka (Risk Management Consultant), and Laura Kankaala (Security Consultant), will host the workshop on Saturday, January 13 from 10:00am to 12:00. Participants will be able to stay at Disobey after the workshop to see additional presentations and talks, including one from F-Secure’s Chief Research Officer Mikko Hypponen.

F-Secure’s Timo Hirvonen, Tomi Tuominen, and Harry Sintonen will also give talks at Disobey on Friday, January 12.
